Selling The Family Business . . .

Reaping The Rewards Of A Lifetime's Labor—Turning Business Assets Into An Income Stream And More

Mitch and Pam were in their late 60s when Mitch decided it was time to think about selling their business.

Of their four children Bob, the oldest, was the only one still working in the family business. The others were established in their careers and busy with their own lives. Mitch wanted to honor Bob’s years of loyal service by selling the business to him. Pam just wanted everything to be fair.

Questions Around The Business Valuation

The valuation of the business came in below what they expected and they had many questions:

How much do we need from the sale of the business to fund our goals?

How can we make this fair to Bob and our other children?

How will taxes affect the sale and what's left for the family after we're gone?

Developing A Plan

We will take Mitch and his wife Pam through our Strategic Planning and Management Process to help them:

      • Clarify and Quantify their remaining life goals,
      • Evaluate all their resources, and
      • Come up with a plan.

Together we'll see if they would be able to fulfill their goals selling the business to Bob at its current valuation. We will provide a written investment plan based on their specific situation and go over it with them to be sure we understand clearly their needs, goals and dreams.

It is not uncommon to find that when all the data
is processed and the planning is done
solutions open up that had not been anticipated.

Working with their CPA and their business and estate planning attorneys or one from our Professional Services Network we will integrate the business sale with their estate planning in a way that will be most equitable for all their children.

Desired Outcome:

They will be able to see that they can achieve their retirement goals, sell the business to Bob at the current valuation, and equitably provide for their other children.

They will be able to set up college funds for the grandchildren and refocus their retirement accounts to position them to enjoy their retirement with confidence in their financial future.
